âHow are you, Sarlaji?â Anupama had barged in all those years ago, much like she had today. Her makeup was tarty; her cleavage generously on display in her small choli.
âWhat brings you here, Anupama? I heard you were moving to Mumbai? Heard you are tying the knot, soon? Hope you will not discontinue acting?â I tried to be civil.
âI shouldâve called first, na? But, but I just thoughtâ¦itâs my duty to tell youâ¦everything. Right from the start, before I left Pune,â she had declared, dramatically narrowing her eyes.
âSo, things between Amitabh and you soured after he didnât select you as the lead actress for his new play, Maya? Youâre not the first one to make these allegations about him, you must know that, Anupamaâ¦â I had remarked, matter-of-factly.
âI know, but this is not about us,â she had snapped.
âThen donât waste my time, dear. I have a dance class waiting. Besides, I have to take Mrinalini to the doctor later,â I called out for Meena-tai.
Anupama clicked her tongue. âThis is in fact about her; your Mrinalini, the one you now think of as your daughter,â she had retorted sardonically. âYes, you heard right, Sarlaji, this is about Mrinalini â the girl who calls you âAiyeeâ.â
âWhat makes you think I should react to every rumour you report? Why do I have to listen to your crazed drivel, Anupama?â I had replied angrily.
âBecause, this time, you have no choice, Sarlaji, you are just as powerless as I am, as we all are!â She had stared back into my eyes. âLook, I just want to be a friend to youâ¦a well-wisher; only a woman can understand another womanâs heart,â she had tried reaching out.
âI have no friends, Anupama,â I cut her short, âI have lived this way since I moved out of my fatherâs house. Also, Mrinalini is my child. I took her in, not Amitabh. So, I would appreciate it if you leave her out of these petty politics and mindless allegations. Sheâs a talented young girl and, will, I know, make her own place under the sun. And, as for Amitabh, heâs a man many admire. To confuse admiration with attraction would be dangerousâ¦for youâ¦so get out of my house. I donât need you and your poisonous mind to taint everything that is pure. Get out now!â I had lost my temper.
Later, of course, I had witnessed the truth with my own eyes.
I had caught Mrinalini in Amitabhâs room.
His head rested on her bosom. She rocked back and forth. Their eyes were closed.
The room too was shadow infested.
